According to the Iowa Atlas published in 1875, "Jesup is a beautiful prairie village, situated near the west line of the county - It has twelve business houses, three elevators, five wagon and blacksmith shops, a graded school with four teachers, three churches, two hotels, etc.  It is a pleasant place, a good shipping point, and has a gradual and steady growth."
